On Chökhor Düchen 2024, a day that celebrates the Buddha’s first turning of the wheel of Dharma, 84000 will host a Teaching on Sūtra with Venerable Thubten Chodron.

An incredible gathering in Bodhgaya, India, as 84000 joined over 1,500 people at the Dzongsar Monlam this October.

This Chötrul Düchen Teachings on Sūtra episode features Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche speaking on ‘Aspiration.’ Rinpoche tells the story of the Buddha’s previous life as Samudrareṇu (“Ocean Particle”).

New York, NY (June 13, 2022) —On the auspicious day of Saga Dawa Düchen—commemorating the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvāṇa—84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha announces that 25 percent of the 70,000 page Tibetan Kangyur has now been published in English translation and made freely available to the world.

New York, NY (December 14, 2021)—84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha (84000.co), a global nonprofit initiative to translate and make freely available the 231,000 pages of the Tibetan Buddhist Canon, proudly announces the English-speaking world’s first complete catalog of the collected treatises—the Tibetan translations of works by the great Indian Buddhist masters explaining and elaborating on the words of the Buddha—known as the Tengyur.

Our second 84000 in Conversation episode is ‘Studying Buddhism in the New Millennium,’  in which Joie Chen spoke with Dr. Kate Hartmann (Assistant Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Wyoming, and Director of Buddhist Studies Online). Together they explored the rewards and challenges of studying and teaching Buddhism in our world today.

On Chökor Düchen, Ven. Konchog Norbu will be exploring 84000’s recently published translation of The Chapter on Medicine, and will offer a distillation of the stories and teachings it contains with special emphasis on the unique and miraculous qualities of the Buddha Śākyamuni.

The first episode of our new 84000 in Conversation series was “Immeasurable Life,” and focused on an exploration of two recently translated texts from the Tibetan Buddhist Canon that have traditionally been recited for longevity. This new weekend series, hosted by 84000 associate editor Joie Chen, will see special guests dropping in to share stories, histories, initiatives, and inspiration, to help us map the sūtras for modern life.

This one-hour event featured guest speaker Erik Pema Kunsang on how the past life stories in the Kangyur can inspire us and deepen our practice. Its concludes with a global live sūtra resounding of The Hundred Deeds.

84000’s first public webinar, entitled “The Kangyur: Holy Relic, Time Capsule, or Goldmine?” featured 84000 Editorial Co-Director Dr. John Canti leading us in a one-hour exploration of how the Tibetan Buddhist Canon came to be, and how today’s world can engage with it.

Join us this Saturday, March 20, to hear editorial co-director, Dr. John Canti, in conversation with Joie Chen, on how the Kangyur came to be, how it has been and continues to be used, and the many treasures it contains.

It feels somewhat bittersweet to share the news that after eleven years helping to incubate, develop, and advise 84000, Cangioli Che is stepping down from the Executive Committee. Since 2009, Cangioli has been instrumental in building the foundations to allow 84000 to become what we are today.
